Jesper Wallstedt Is In The Form Of His Life

The 23-year-old Jesper Wallstedt Minnesota Wild goalie is putting up numbers that do not look real: shutouts all over the place, an unbeaten record in regulation, and the NHL Rookie of the Month award for November in his pocket. Jesper Wallstedt Stats: 2025–26 Season And November Tear

Wallstedt’s current run is not just “hot goalie” talk. His underlying Jesper Wallstedt stats sit at the top of the league.

Wallstedt now has five shutouts in 15 NHL games over three seasons, which makes him the second fastest in league history to reach that mark. Only Frank Brimsek, “Mr. Zero,” got to five shutouts quicker, with five in his first nine starts back in 1938–39.

Jesper Wallstedt shrugged off the hype and put it back on the skaters in front of him:

“I just can’t thank my teammates enough, nothing would be possible without them. I’m just trying to do my job and making a lot of saves, but you can’t do that without the way we’ve been playing, tonight and every other game.”

From AHL Frustration To NHL Calm

The current version of Jesper Wallstedt becomes more impressive when you look at where he was last season.

Jesper Wallstedt arrived in North America as a first round pick, chosen 20th overall by the Wild in the 2021 NHL Draft. Expectations were huge. Reality hit harder.

Jesper spent most of last year with Iowa in the AHL and had a rough time:

  • Iowa Wild (AHL): 9-14-4, 3.59 GAA, .879 save percentage in 27 games
  • Two early NHL games that both ended in losses with a 4.09 GAA and .843 save percentage
  • Had his mindset shaken when he did not make the big club out of camp

Later, he got another look and started to stabilise:

  • Minnesota Wild 2023–24: 2-1-0 with a 3.01 GAA and .897 save percentage, including a 24-save 4-0 shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks for his first NHL win on April 7, 2024

Coach John Hynes did not hide that the first part of that journey was messy:

“He didn’t handle it well at the end of training camp last year when he went down and I think that did affect him early in the season.”

The important part is what came next.

“He had a tough year last year and he didn’t handle the situation the right way, but he took the action steps and learned lessons from that and turned it into action of what he needs to do to be able to play at this level.”

He went from “disappointed prospect in the AHL” to “unbeaten NHL starter sharing the net with Filip Gustavsson” in one offseason.

Preparation, Not Magic

Ask Hynes what changed and he points straight at the stuff no one sees.

“He made some real commitments to show that he wants to be able to get the best out of his abilities.”

That includes:

  • Cleaning up nutrition
  • Treating rest and recovery like part of the job
  • Taking practice as seriously as games
  • Embracing the workload of an NHL starter, not just a call-up

The Wild needed this. With Marc-Andre Fleury retiring, they could not afford a soft backup experiment. They needed a real NHL goalie to form a tandem with Gustavsson. Wallstedt stepped into that space.

Hynes likes the progress but keeps the language grounded:

“We know he has NHL talent, but I think now he’s learning the other parts, whether it’s the game or being the starting goalie or how important things around the game are.”

They are trying to keep Jesper Wallstedt focused in short runs, not big declarations.

“We’ll just keep taking it in short spurts with him and as long as he continues doing what he’s doing, he’ll get opportunities to play moving forward.”

Making Hard Saves Look Simple

Watch Jesper Wallstedt in net and you notice the same thing everyone on the Wild talks about: calm. There is almost no panic in his game. He tracks the puck early, squares up, and lets the shot hit him.

Teammate Jonas Brodin explained it perfectly:

“He’s a calm, confident guy and it feels good to have him back there. Every shot you don’t get stressed out from it and he’s been confident and he’s playing really well.”

Then the line that will follow him for a while:

“All the saves look kind of easy, even if it’s really hard, he makes it look easy for him.”

That is exactly what high-end goaltending looks like when it is working. A big frame, clean skating, and smart positioning combine to turn highlight-reel chances into routine saves. Wallstedt himself describes his approach in very simple terms:

“My game plan is to make pucks come to me and just be in the right place at the right time.”

When shots look like they “just hit him,” that means he prepared early, read the play correctly, and moved once instead of three times.

“I think when I’m calm, that’s the key. As soon as I start to look like I’m out of place and I’m everywhere, that’s not a good sign usually.”

Right now Jesper Wallstedt looks anything but out of place.

Beating McDavid, MacKinnon And The Pressure

This is not some padded stat line built against weak opponents.

In this stretch, Jesper Wallstedt has:

  • Shut out Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on the road with 33 saves in a 1-0 win
  • Stopped Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche with a 39-save 3-2 shootout victory
  • Turned away 304 of 322 shots this season

You do not put up those numbers without elite play reading and mental control. Jesper Wallstedt credits preparation again:

“Usually when it looks like it hits me instead of me saving them, it’s usually a good sign and I felt that way [Tuesday]. I felt like I did the work beforehand to be in good position to make saves, and obviously my teammates helped me a lot and I can see shots and try to keep the rebounds from being there.”

Jesper Wallstedt: Living In The Moment, Shaping The Future

The best part is that Jesper Wallstedt seems to get how fragile this level is. He has already been through a year where nothing felt right.

“I know what it’s like to not have so much fun,” he said, which is a very polite way of referring to getting sent down and struggling.

Right now he is surfing the total opposite: wins, shutouts, awards, and a Minnesota Wild point streak that has pulled the team back into the mix. If this is the baseline for Jesper Wallstedt at 23, and he keeps this same attitude around work and calm, Minnesota might have their next long-term number one goalie already in the crease.
