The Isle of Wight has been a special place for Steven Bennett since his childhood. The 72 year old Londoner spent his family holidays there and visited often after his parents moved to the island 40 years ago. Now, as a National Lottery Lucky Dip winner, he has an even greater reason to love it, after winning £1 million on a ticket bought at a local shop.
How the Lucky Dip Became a £1M Win
Steven, a widower who worked in the recycling industry, explained, “I sometimes buy a couple of Lucky Dips when I’m on the island, but it depends on the queue, if there is one, I won’t bother. When I saw there was no one in front of me, it felt like my lucky day. I just didn’t realise how lucky until the following week!”
It wasn’t until the Monday after the draw on Friday 2nd May 2025 that this National Lottery Lucky Dip winner remembered the ticket in his back pocket. At first, he thought he had won £10,000 before realising it was actually £1 million. “At that point it was very much a case of ‘Gordon Bennett!’ I had a sit down and a whiskey to calm down,” Steven said.
Sharing the Lucky Dip Prize with Family
Rather than reveal the news immediately, Steven played along with a little mystery. He invited family to a BBQ in East London, acting just suspicious enough to get them guessing. The next day, he told his daughter Sally, sons John and Tom, and seven grandchildren the truth. “Family is everything. That’s why this win is for all of us, not just me,” said the National Lottery millionaire.
Future Plans on the Isle of Wight
Steven is in the process of buying a flat in Essex but also plans to purchase a home on the Isle of Wight, close to the beach. “It’s a special place for all of us, and with a nice house on the island, we can make special memories together,” he shared. This £1M lottery win means more family time, property investments, and lasting traditions.
